Android

What is Android?

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language.

The following diagram shows the major components of the Android operating system. Each section is described in more detail below.

Applications

Android will ship with a set of core applications including an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others. All applications are written using the Java programming language.

Application Framework

By providing an open development platform, Android offers developers the ability to build extremely rich and innovative applications. Developers are free to take advantage of the device hardware, access location information, run background services, set alarms, add notifications to the status bar, and much, much more.

Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.

Underlying all applications is a set of services and systems, including:

  • A rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser
  • Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications (such as Contacts), or to share their own data
  • A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files
  • A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar
  • An Activity Manager that manages the lifecycle of applications and provides a common navigation backstack

Libraries

Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries used by various components of the Android system. These capabilities are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. Some of the core libraries are listed below:

  • System C library – a BSD-derived implementation of the standard C system library (libc), tuned for embedded Linux-based devices
  • Media Libraries – based on PacketVideo’s OpenCORE; the libraries support playback and recording of many popular audio and video formats, as well as static image files, including MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, and PNG
  • Surface Manager – manages access to the display subsystem and seamlessly composites 2D and 3D graphic layers from multiple applications
  • LibWebCore – a modern web browser engine which powers both the Android browser and an embeddable web view
  • SGL – the underlying 2D graphics engine
  • 3D libraries – an implementation based on OpenGL ES 1.0 APIs; the libraries use either hardware 3D acceleration (where available) or the included, highly optimized 3D software rasterizer
  • FreeType – bitmap and vector font rendering
  • SQLite – a powerful and lightweight relational database engine available to all applications

Android Runtime

Android includes a set of core libraries that provides most of the functionality available in the core libraries of the Java programming language.

Every Android application runs in its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik virtual machine. Dalvik has been written so that a device can run multiple VMs efficiently. The Dalvik VM executes files in the Dalvik Executable (.dex) format which is optimized for minimal memory footprint. The VM is register-based, and runs classes compiled by a Java language compiler that have been transformed into the .dex format by the included “dx” tool.

The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Linux Kernel

Android relies on Linux version 2.6 for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.

1. Kebutuhan is no 1

Hal pertama yang harus diperhatikan adalah kebutuhan kita akan gadget android, ada beberapa pilihan yang bisa menjadi pilihan utama,antara lain; hiburan, game, pekerjaan,sosial dll. Misalnya jika kita lebih memilih untuk hiburan dan  pekerjaan maka gadget tablet cocok untuk anda apalagi jika anda telah mempunyai handphone, ataupun sebaliknya.

2. Lihat keadaan kantong anda

Jangan memaksakan budget anda untuk membeli gadget android yang sekiranya mahal dan memberatkan kantong anda karena kebanyakan akan menyesal karena melebihi batas kemampuan anda untuk membeli. Masih banyak kebutuhan penting lainnya. Kecuali jika anda memang telah menabung untuk gadget tersebut.

3. Cari info mengenai gadget incaran anda

Salah satu point penting lainnya adalah carilah informasi yang lengkap mengenai gadget incaran anda  di internet maupun bertanya pada teman, bandingkan dengan gadget android lainnya yang harganya serupa agar anda tidak menyesal nantinya. Jangan mudah terpengaruh iklan, so “smart in buy”

4. New is not important

Untuk mendapatkan gadget android, kita tidak harus membeli gadget baru karena gadget second pun banyak tersedia dengan berbagai macam kondisi. Tapi ketelitian sangat diperlukan dalam hal ini supaya tidak salah membeli. Teliti dahulu sebelum membeli gadget second, bertanya lebih baik  agar gadget android second yang anda beli memang sesuai dengan kondisi sebenarnya agar tidak menyesal kemudian

  • Kesan Pertama saat saya mencoba Android adalah : “bingung ga karuan” tanpa adanya dukungan koneksi internet yang cukup mumpuni, Android Phone akan terasa seperti handphone biasa yang cuma bisa nelpon,  sms dan maen game doank
  • Stabil, hampir tidak pernah saya mengalami crash saat melakukan beberapa operasi, tidak seperti sebelumnya saat menggunakan jendela, sering saat saya sedang asik2 tiba-tiba restart
  • Dukungan berbagi foto dan video dengan mengunggah ke beberapa layanan seperti Youtube, Flickr, Picasa dan Facebook akan sangat membantu saat mendokumentasikan sesuatu
  • Contact (People) yang bisa diintegrasikan dengan facebook, jadi begitu terkoneksi dengan internet, kita bisa langsung ngliat status update temen dari phonebook
  • Fitur multitouch yang sangat memudahkan untuk memperbesar dan memperkecil gambar, foto ataupun halaman web
  • Pushmailnya Google
  • Installasi Applikasi sangat mudah dengan menggunakan Market, walaupun untuk wilayah Indonesia tidak disediakan applikasi berbayar alias yang dimunculkan yang free aja, tapi… memang itu kan yang kita cari?
  • Flash yang udah secara default didukung browser, jadi lebih enak kalau ngliat web yang ngembed video
  • Keyboard responsif, tapi kalau posisi berdiri (potrait) munculnya kecil2, buat yang belum terbiasa atau yang jarinya gede2 pasti banyak salah kalau ngetik.
  • Fitur autocompletion yang secara default aktif kalau menurut saya malah mengganggu kalau ngetik selain bahasa Inggris, jadi lebih baik dimatikan saja ya nak ya

Google baru saja merilis SDK dari Android 3.0 Honeycomb yang ditujukan untuk pengembang/programer perangkat lunak. Meski belum dirilis untuk publik namun dengan adanya SDK ini bisa memberikan gambaran mengenai kemampuan OS mobile yang dioptimasi untuk tablet ini.

Berikut 10 fitur baru yang ada di OS dengan gambar lebah biru ini.

  • Ada efek grafik 3 dimensi yang bisa bekerja dengan mulus walaupun untuk aplikasi dengan kebutuhan kinerja grafis tinggi. Efek 3D ini juga tersedia untuk aplikasi, wallpaper, dan grafik lainnya.
  • Antarmuka pengguna (UI) Honeycomb didesain ulang khusus untuk tablet dengan mememperhitungkan ukuran layar yang lebih besar daripada OS Android sebelumnya yang didesain untuk layar smartphone ukuran maksimal 4 inci. Layar muka Honeycomb juga memakai papan menu yang selalu nampak di bagian bawah layar. Papan ini berisi notifikasi, status sistem, dan navigasi di layar selain tampilan jam, mode redup, dan lain-lain. Sementara itu tampilan papan aksi di bagian atas akan tergantung pada aplikasinya.
  • Multitasking yang lebih mudah dengan adanya peluncur aplikasi yang baru dijalankan (recent apps). Tool ini terdapat di sistem bar sehingga selalu terlihat dan memudahkan untuk berpindah antaraplikasi tanpa perlu masuk ke dalam menu.
  • Papan ketik virtual yang bersahabat dan mudah digunakan. Layarnya lebih alami dan lebih besar dengan meniru tampilan papan ketik notebook/laptop dan bukan seperti papan ketik ponsel.
  • Copy/paste yang lebih baik dengan tambahan opsi menu untuk operasi manipulasi teks. Papan menu di bagian atas akan menyediakan berbagai opsi seperti cut, copy, copy ke clipboard, share, paste, pencarian ke web, hingga pencarian lokal.
  • Peningkatan koneksi termasuk wifi dan Bluetooth untuk tethering. Pemindaian atas wifi ditingkatkan sehingga bisa mempercepat penyambungan koneksi sementara dengan Bluetooth pengguna bisa melakukan tether dan membagi koneksinya dengan perangkat lain termasuk dukungan ke perangkat sederhana yang tidak memiliki antarmuka pengguna.
  • Penjelajahan web anonim juga didukung dalam Honeycomb. Pengguna bisa menjelajah web secara privat termasuk mode incognito untuk melakukan pencarian di web secara diam-diam. Selain itu browsernya juga diubah dari multi-window menjadi tabulasi dengan halaman terbuka akan ditampilkan pada papan yang berada di bagian atas layar. Sinkronisasi bookmark juga tersedia berkat opsi akun Google untuk segala aktivitas.
  • Aplikasi yang sudah ada juga akan tetap bekerja baik meski aplikasi yang tersedia di Android Market saat ini didesain untuk smartphone yang memiliki ukuran layar lebih kecil. Tombol fungsi menu yang ada di ponsel Android sekarang digantikan dengan menu Action Bar. Ada juga opsi bagi developer untuk membuat tata letak bagi layar yang lebih besar dan menambahkannya pada aplikasi yang sudah mereka buat.
  • Pengorganisasian email lebih mudah dengan tampilan dua bagian layar. Ini seakan meniru tampilan pada iPad yang bekerja dengan mengesankan. Pengorganisasian menjadi lebih mudah termasuk adanya fitur sinkronisasi email.
  • Widget akan lebih interaktif dengan fungsi yang lebih beragam dan tidak hanya pasif menunggu informasi dari penguna. Gerakan tangan dan jari juga bisa digunakan untuk menggulung layar secara 3D untuk menyusun konten termasuk operasi navigasi yang lebih menyenangkan.
